Art Therapy and Sexual Violence

How can Art Therapy help navigate harm caused from sexual violence trauma?

Sometimes, the process of creating objects in the presence of a therapist helps us process some of the pain we experience from harm done to us. In this work, I present “cunt-objects”, which are vulvas created with patterned fabric, beads, cotton and more. They can serve as attachment-objects between survivors of sexual violence and their therapists who help people walk their transformative healing journeys.

These objects can also help reorient a person’s relationship to their genitals, or to their partner’s genitals, with or without sexuality. It is a rich experience making them, talking to them, holding them or playing with them.

The objects can assist in sex education, centering female pleasure, making it easier to talk about things that have social shame around them.
